Monumental Shipibo Pottery Olla, 30" tall

Colossal in size, this remarkable pottery jar is bold and dwarfs anything we’ve previously seen from this indigenous tribe from the rainforest of Peru. With big geometric and cruciform designs, it’s broad shouldered with a tapering shape. It’s difficult for any skilled potter anywhere to create a vessel of this size, let alone a primitive artisan who, when this was made in the early 20th century, looked inward for inspiration rather than to the larger world. It is classic and representative in design to the Shipibo people. The task of getting it out of their remote area along the Amazon suggests that it must have been shipped by boat. To have gotten it out of there in one piece had to have been a major effort and reflects the high regard in which it was held. It remains in excellent, unrestored condition.
