Pair of French Louis XV Style Carved Giltwood Antique Arm Chairs Circa 1900
This striking pair of Louis XV style fauteuils retain an original and rather early gilding naturally worn down to the gesso in some areas over a vibrant carved surface. The chairs exhibit a skilled carver’s hand, the displays mostly of acanthus and foliate inspiration borrowing heavily from the Rococo period, the crest rail with hints of the rocaille amongst C-scrolls. These are crisp and beautiful, particularly as the raised portions have worn and the gilding becomes highlights within the crevices of the more trafficked carvings. Sleek and subtle with their thin cabriole legs and undulating curvatures, they are a very striking pair of chairs. They will need to be reupholstered, as the current covering was very poorly executed; the arms are a bit loose, but cannot be tightened until all upholstery is removed so they are being sold as-is.
