Solman Title: Untitled Abstract (P305) Date: 1980 Medium: Oil on canvas board Dimensions: 16” x 20” Philip A. Solman (d. 1982) was an artist and electrical engineer. He lived and worked in Queens. In the 1960s, he primarily produced sculpture, assembling figurative works from everyday and industrial materials. In the 1970s, he turned to abstract painting, which often incorporated collaged elements. Solman clearly references his major influences in his work, drawing on stylistic motifs from Picasso, Klee, Kandinsky, Frank Stella and Joseph Cornell. The high-key colors and hard-edged geometric forms of this late painting from 1980 reflect Solman’s awareness of punk and New Wave graphic styles current in the downtown club scene in the late ‘70s.
