"Racine Et Ciel" Draft Painted Wooden Relief by Jean Legros (French 1917-1981)
Avery & Dash Collections
“Racine et Ciel” (Root and Sky) – 1969. A monochromatic white oil-painted wooden relief. Hand-written title, signed and dated Jean Etienne Legros 1969 and studio stamp on the back of the work. Hand-crafted by the artist, beige linen covered wooden frame. Between 1966 and 1970, Legros interrupted his pictorial practice to create relief assemblies in white painted wood or brass. These relief-sculptures are the result of the combination of geometric rigor and surrealist fantasy inspired by the artist Jean Arp. Legros created organic irregular shapes evocative of natural forms. In his reliefs, Legros always established a connection between these biomorphic forms of the natural world in such a way as to unveil the poetic elements hidden in everyday images. Certificate of authenticity from the artist’s wife who inventoried her husband’s body of work. Provenance: The artist’s studio thence by descent.
