Renee Cocktail Table
Among the furnishings collected by du Pont is a pine table thought to have been made in Pennsylvania between 1750 and 1775. The six-sided top is composed of wedge-shaped sections around a hexagonal center. Wooden pegs secure each section to board braces attached to the skirt. Shaped brackets embellish the joints between the skirt and six straight legs and stretchers reinforce the legs close to the ground. With its brown-painted surface and sturdy construction, this type of table was used in taverns throughout the colonies in the 18th century. Taverns performed many functions at that time, most involving the offer of food, warmth, and hospitality to weary travelers. Winterthur Estate collection
