Popularly known as the First Lady of Danish Furniture Design, Nanna Ditzel brought innovation, wit and grace to furniture, textiles and jewelry throughout her six-decade career. In 1942, she started as an apprentice cabinetmaker before earning a degree in furniture design from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1946, she and her husband, Jrgen, a master upholsterer, founded a studio in Copenhagen, then went on to win eight design competitions in their very first year. The awards continued at such a rate that today design prizes abound bearing the Ditzel name. Sharing a fascination for new materials and methods, the Ditzels became masters in creating comfortable curves. One of their most elegant and widely celebrated pieces is the Ring Chair (1958), with its unique bolster back. This chair is still handcrafted using traditional Scandinavian techniques by skilled cabinetmakers, one of whom worked alongside Hans Wegner. Made in Denmark.
