Specimen Cabinet on Stand, c. 1800

Sorry, this product is no longer available, please visit incollect for related products.

This cedrella specimen cabinet, likely made in the West Indies, is a complicated piece of cabinetmaking certainly made to house a specific collection. The top is a dovetailed box with applied molding with an arched inlaid panel on each door. The doors open to reveal 12 dovetailed drawers, each divided into 56 small square compartments. The drawer fronts have remnants of original paper labels and painted numbers. The base cabinets have three drawer fronts, but only the outer two are working drawers, lined with original paper. In the center section, the faux drawer front slides up to expose a cubbyhole with a false bottom that lifts out to gain access to another compartment concealed behind the shaped apron. There is an inscription at the front of this compartment “Jacob Robbins.” The carved cabriole legs and hoof feet support the case. All original condition, including hardware.
