T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings was born in London and emigrated to America in 1936. He worked as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company from 1943 – 1956. It was during this time he designed this desk for Widdicomb, Model 317. This desk is made with solid oak secondary woods and figured walnut on the face. It is finished in black lacquer and polished to a high “piano quality” shine. This desk can be free standing as it is finished on the back, inlays of solid brass have been added to the back of the desk. This small detail ties the whole look together while still keeping the simplicity that makes it so breathtaking. The brass ring pulls have been hand polished to a high shine and sprayed with clear lacquer to prevent oxidation. The drawers are dovetailed at the drawer fronts and have been finished with clear lacquer. The middle drawer has a label that reads “Modern Original, Widdicomb” This desk is on caster wheels making it easy and convenient to move.
