The Lincoln chimneypiece
This white marble mantelpiece of strong architectural form is after a design by Sir John Soane (1753-1837), who had adapted an earlier design of Inigo Jones’. The rectangular moulded mantel shelf above a plain heavily and deeply moulded frieze with a geometric design continuing down the jambs. The original antique chimney was at the Bank of England.
