Vintage Mexican Modernist Wood Sculpture by Jose Pinal
This striking wood portrait of a man is a fine example of Mexican modernism. The sculpture is hand carved and uniquely faceted in geometric style and rests on a 2 inch wood plinth. This unusual piece has a neo-Cubist sensibility and the wood is a rich color, the grain visible and the surface worked carefully and expertly to form a beautiful modern portrait. Called the Mexican Picasso, Pinal (1913-1983) exhibited in the 1939 San Francisco World Fair and was widely collected throughout the Americas. The sculpture is unusually large for the artist, making it very rare. It measures 7 inches and with the plinth 9 1/4 inches; signed on the bottom of the bust “J. Pinal”, the standard artist’s mark. less Dimensions 6.0ʺW × 0.1ʺD × 9.0ʺH
