Young Woman in Pink Dress- Portrait by Eliasz Kanarek 1901-1969
Exceptional oil on linen by listed Polish artist Eliasz (Elias) Kanarek (1901-1969). This is a portrait commissioned for Dorothea Vogel- a long time San Francisco resident for what appears to be her sixteenth birthday. Poised yet slightly awkward, Kanarek perfectly captures her on the cusp between childhood and adulthood. Kanarek, a Polish citizen, came to the US to work on a series of paintings in the Polish Pavilion at 1939 NY World Expo. WWII soon broke out and it became unsafe to return to Poland and as he was Jewish- he remained in the US for the rest of his life. He became a highly sought after portrait artist in the US. 25″ × 33″ roughly- encased in frame 31″ × 39″ frame
